Understanding Comics Chapter 5

The fact that a picture can evoke an emotional response in the viewer is vital to the art of comics. People become interested in the power of line, shape, and color to suggest the inner state of the artist. All lines in comics carry an expressive potential. Lines can look exactly the same within a cartoon yet hold two different meanings. Symbols are the basis of language. If many artists start using the same symbols, then they will become a part of the language for good. Backgrounds are equally as important when indicating invisible ideas. Pictures can induce strong feelings in the reader. In the end, what you get is what you give.
