Like many others, John Heskett’s book discusses how hard it is to give design a definition. He believes it is hard to define because mutual understandings do not exist and that design means something different to everyone. He states that design should be shaped and constructed for the betterment of everyone. Design is one of the basic characteristics of what it is to be a human in that it affects everyone in every way possible. Good design is so crucial that bad design can be life threatening or have many negative outcomes. A single specific cause for bad design cannot be identified because it can be many things, lack of expenses being a common one. It would be very naive for someone to say that design doesn’t affect them whatsoever because the forms and structures that we see in this world are all because of design.
