Kees Dorst’s book discusses the definition of design and also the different types of design strategies. He starts off by comparing how math students would go about solving a problem to how design students would. Math students would analyze the problem until they understand it and then solve it. However, design students find out the possible solutions and then try to improve them. The difference between the two is that designers think about the solution first instead of the problem. He discusses the different phase models that allow designers to define a problem, analyze it to the formulated requirements, and then generate solutions. Designers often come up with multiple solutions, pick a solution, and then implement the chosen solution. If the designer’s goals are clear and stable, then solutions can be made. The design process in itself is somewhat of an evolution. There are multiple steps that a designer goes through to get to the final product. They start with a primitive object and encounter many steps before they reach the end results. Dorst compares the design process to a game. By this he means that design problems can be challenging to solve and solutions can be somewhat of a gamble, but once you choose the correct one, you win.
